You must wonder what is the difference between HDD and SSD. I talked about this in my article.
HDD
Hard Disk is also known as HDD. Hard disk drives have been around for more than 50 years. In a hard disk mechanical component is used to read and write data. There is a head and platter in which the head is used to read and write data on the platter.
A hard disk consists of one or more platters, an actuator arm with a reading/writing head, and a motor to move the head and spin platters. Add also has an I/O controller and firmware that tells the hardware what to do and how to communicate with the system.
Each platter is divided into a concentric circle called tracks. The track is divided into logical units called sectors. Each track and sector number outcome a unique address that can be used to arrange and locate data.
Benefits of Hard disk
- HDD is less expensive than SSD.
- HDD is available with more space than SSD.
Drawback of Hard disk
- HDD produces more sound and consumes a high amount of power.
- HDD lifespan is also less.
SSD
A Solid State Disk is also known as SSD. SSD is a kind of flash memory. In SSD, there is no mechanical component like a head and platter, which makes it more durable.
In SSD, at the lowest level, floating gate transistors record a charge(or lack of a charge) to store data. The gates are organized in a grid pattern, which is further organized into a block. Block size can vary but each row that makes up the grid is called a page.
SSD has a controller which performs several functions including keeping track of where data is located.
Benefit of SSD
- SSD has a fast read and writing speed.
- SSD consumes less power.
- SSD produces less sound.
Drawback of SSD
- SSD is more expensive.
- SSD is available in fewer amounts.
Conclusion
Bases | HDD | SSD |
Stand | Hard Disk | Solid State Drive |
Speed | Slow as compared to SSD | Fast as compared to HDD |
Durability | less durability | More durability |
Weight | heavy | light |
power consumption | high | low |
noise | produce sound | not produce sound |
