Do you know what is Ram? You must hear many times the word Ram and from that, you must be wondering what the ram is, where it is used, and what its type is. So in this article, I talked about all the above points. So let’s start.
RAM (Random Access Memory) is the memory used to store and retrieve data on a computer. It is the most critical component of devices like PCs, smartphones, and gaming consoles. Ram is used to store data to provide it to the CPU for processing at a faster rate. Ram has a high data transfer rate as compared to other memory. It is used to store the data of running programs.
Characteristics of Ram
- Ram is a volatile memory.
- It is costly compared to other memory.
- It has less capacity as compared to other memory.
- It has a high transfer speed.
- It is in direct relation to the CPU.
- It is a working memory of devices.
- It is responsible for running applications, programs, instruction
- It holds data when power is available.
Types of ram
- Static ram
- Dynamic ram
Static ram
As its name indicates it is static which means it retains stored data only as long as a power supply is available. Static RAM is also known as SRAM. In SRAM 6 transistor is used. It stores information in Hip-Hope.
SRAM doesn’t require refreshing again and again to hold data. SRAM requires more chips to store data same data stored in DRAM. It makes it more expensive, which is why it is used as cache memory. Static RAM is used to create the CPU’s speed-sensitive cache.
Characteristics of SRAM
- The life of this ram is very long.
- It does not need to be refreshed frequently.
- It is speedy.
- It is used for cache memory.
- It is large.
- It is expensive.
- It requires high power.
Dynamic ram
Dynamic RAM loses stored data in a very short time. It is also known as DRAM.DRAM forms the larger system RAM space.
DRAM requires refreshing frequently to retain information stored in it by doing a refresh again and again slowing down the memory. DRAM is made up of one capacitor and a transistor. it is used to make a system memory.
Characteristics of DRam
- This ram has a low days life cycle.
- It needs to be refreshed frequently.
- It is prolonged.
- It is available at a low cost.
- It requires less power.
- It is used as cache memory.
- It is low in size.
